Kayak at Las Negras

Sea caves, volcanic cliffs and secret beaches

The kayak route at Las Negras takes you along one of the most spectacular stretches of Mediterranean coastline. Setting off from the picturesque fishing village of Las Negras, you'll paddle beneath towering black volcanic cliffs, enter impressive sea caves and discover pristine beaches accessible only from the water. This route is perfect for all abilities: the waters are generally sheltered by the natural shape of the cape, creating a calm environment ideal for beginners. Our expert guides will teach you the basic paddling techniques on land before heading out, and will be by your side throughout the adventure. Along the way you'll have the chance to snorkel over rich marine habitats — it's common to spot octopus, parrotfish, sea bream and moray eels in the nursery grounds protected by the Natural Park.

The ecosystem you will see

The Las Negras route runs through one of the best-preserved coastal stretches of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and protected Marine Reserve. The absence of urban development and official protection make this coastline an unparalleled natural laboratory in the European Mediterranean.

Volcanic geology

Las Negras cliffs result from volcanic eruptions 8 million years ago during the Miocene era. The black basaltic and andesitic rocks that give the village its name form columns, chimneys and arches emerging from the sea in unique sculptural shapes. The volcanic geology of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is the most representative in the western Mediterranean, with formations found nowhere else on the Spanish coast.

Marine fauna

The Natural Park Marine Reserve protects extraordinary biodiversity. Snorkelling reveals colonies of octopus, moray eels, conger eels and starfish. The volcanic beds harbour large grouper (Epinephelus marginatus), notably recovering thanks to protection. Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) are commonly sighted on the surface in summer. Sea bream, white seabream, dentex and serranids complete a reef ecosystem unmatched in the Spanish Mediterranean.

Posidonia oceanica

The posidonia oceanica meadows lining the route are the blue lung of the Mediterranean. This marine flowering plant produces up to 14 litres of oxygen per m² per day, filters the water and serves as nursery and refuge for over 1,000 animal species. Cabo de Gata meadows are among the densest and healthiest in the Mediterranean, thanks to the absence of pollution and restrictions on motorised navigation in the Marine Reserve.

Route highlights

Every stretch of this route holds a surprise. Here is what you will see at each point of the journey.

1

Las Negras Beach — Departure point

The route begins at volcanic Las Negras beach, where black pebbles contrast with deep turquoise water. The small fishing village has preserved its authentic essence: boats beached on the sand, nets drying in the sun, and a pace of life contrasting with mass tourism elsewhere on the Andalusian coast. It is the last inhabited settlement before entering completely virgin coastline within Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.

2

Punta Negra — Volcanic cliffs

Rounding the first headland, the volcanic cliffs of Punta Negra reveal their most spectacular face. Black basalt columns rise up to 50 metres above sea level, with stratifications revealing millions of years of geological history. The sea caves at water level are the favourite habitat of octopus and moray eels. From the kayak you get a perspective of this volcanic geology that is impossible from land.

3

Cala del Cuervo — The secret cove

Hidden between two volcanic spurs, Cala del Cuervo is one of those spots that does not appear on tourist maps. Only accessible from the sea, this space of dark sand and transparent water is the perfect spot for a snorkel break. The volcanic rocky beds at just three metres depth harbour a wide variety of reef fish and echinoderms characteristic of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park Marine Reserve.

4

Cala de San Pedro — The final destination

The highlight of the route is Cala de San Pedro, a completely pristine golden-sand beach unreachable by any road. You can only arrive on foot via a 5km trail from Las Negras, or by kayak as we do. Above the beach, the ruins of San Pedro Castle — built in the 13th century by Alfonso X the Wise — watch over the coast from atop the volcanic promontory. A freshwater spring emerges from the beach sand, creating an oasis on this arid coastline. Today a small alternative community permanently inhabits the cove, without electricity or running water.

History and curiosities of the area

The Las Negras coast is an open history book. From the Phoenicians to today's alternative communities, every corner holds a story that goes beyond the landscape.

First settlers (6th century BC)

The Phoenicians were the first to establish trade routes along this coast, attracted by the rich tuna shoals off the cape and the silver and lead veins inland. The Arab toponym "Yazu" — meaning black point in reference to the volcanic rocks — evolved during the Reconquista into the present-day Las Negras. Archaeological excavations in the area have found Phoenician and Roman amphorae, confirming centuries of commercial activity in these waters.

Berber pirates (16th–18th centuries)

During the 16th to 18th centuries, the Cabo de Gata coast was one of the most active scenes of Berber piracy in the western Mediterranean. North African corsairs raided fishing settlements, taking captives for ransom. San Pedro Castle was reinforced to shelter the population. The watchtowers dotting the coast — some visible from the kayak — are the architectural legacy of this era of maritime insecurity that deeply marked the history of the area.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Marine Reserve

The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park was declared a Natural Park in 1987 and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997, becoming one of the few Mediterranean coastal ecosystems with maximum-level protection. The Marine Reserve creation has allowed spectacular recovery of species such as grouper, lobster and date mussel, restoring a biodiversity to these waters that has almost entirely disappeared from the rest of the Spanish Mediterranean. Today the park is considered the best-preserved Mediterranean marine area in mainland Spain, and the Las Negras kayak route is one of the few ways to explore its most remote interior.
