One of the most common questions we receive is: when is the best time to kayak in Cabo de Gata? The short answer is that the park is paddleable almost all year round, but each season offers a different experience. Here is our month-by-month guide to help you choose the ideal date.
Cabo de Gata's climate: what you need to know
Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park has the most arid climate in continental Europe, with fewer than 200 mm of rain per year and more than 3,000 hours of sunshine. For sea kayaking, what matters most is not rain but wind. The two dominant winds are the Levante (east) and the Poniente (west). The Levante is the one to watch: it can arrive suddenly and kick up choppy seas within hours. The Poniente is generally gentler and more stable.
Month-by-month: kayak season in Cabo de Gata
January & February: the park in silence
Winter in Cabo de Gata is surprisingly mild (15–18°C air temperature) with mostly sunny days. The main advantage is almost complete solitude. The downside is water temperature (13–15°C) — cold for snorkelling without a wetsuit. Best for experienced kayakers who enjoy the solitude. Rating: ★★★☆☆
March & April: spring awakening
Temperatures become very pleasant (18–22°C) and the water starts warming (16–18°C). The park is still quiet compared to summer, the flamingos arrive at the salt flats, and underwater visibility is excellent. April is particularly beautiful — the volcanic sierra fills with flowering retama. Rating: ★★★★☆
May & June: the ideal months
May and June are, in our view, the best months of the year to kayak in Cabo de Gata. Water temperature reaches 20–22°C (ideal for snorkelling without a wetsuit), days are long, crowds have not yet peaked and weather is generally stable. Dolphin sightings at Arrecife de las Sirenas are at their most frequent. Underwater visibility is exceptional. Rating: ★★★★★
July & August: high season
Water temperature peaks at 24–26°C — perfect for swimming. The main issue is the Levante, which is most frequent in summer and can arrive suddenly. For this reason, summer kayak tours depart early morning (8:30–9:00 am) when the sea is calmest. Afternoons can be unstable. Book well in advance. Rating: ★★★☆☆
September & October: the best-kept secret
Many experienced kayakers argue that September and October are the best months of the year. Water is at its warmest (25–27°C in September), tourists have gone home, winds are more stable than in summer and the autumn light gives Cabo de Gata's volcanic landscapes a spectacular golden quality. In October, bird migration begins — the park becomes one of the most important stopover points in Europe. Rating: ★★★★★
November & December: total tranquillity
Similar to winter but with slightly more activity. Temperatures remain mild, the park is almost deserted and accommodation prices are at their lowest. For those seeking solitude and willing to brave cooler water, it can be a revelation. Rating: ★★★☆☆

Final tips for choosing your date
If you have complete flexibility, choose May, June or September. If you can only go in summer, book morning departures well in advance. If you want absolute solitude and don't mind cooler water, winter can be a revelation. Whatever you choose, always check the local weather forecast in the days before your trip and stay flexible enough to reschedule if conditions are not ideal — safety always comes first.
